1. Keep the work organized.

The first way to avoid accidents is to keep the construction site organized. A disorganized environment is an invitation for various accidents to occur. Therefore, it is very important to supervise the bricklayers and laborers and instruct them to keep the workplace clean and organized. This simple tip can prevent many accidents on a construction site.

2. Pay attention to the Regulatory Standards.

It is essential that engineers and construction supervisors are familiar with the Regulatory Standards. The NR standards are a set of mandatory regulations for occupational health and safety. They are divided according to their purpose; for example, to carry out construction work on the electrical grid, it is necessary to know NR 10, which regulates Safety in Electrical Installations and Services. If it is necessary to use machinery, NR 12, concerning Safety at Work in Machinery and Equipment, must be known. Each procedure must be followed according to its corresponding standard to ensure safe and correct progress.

3. Create a CIPA (Internal Commission for Accident Prevention) for the construction site.

The Internal Commission for Accident Prevention (CIPA), as described in NR 5 (Brazilian Regulatory Standard 5), aims to prevent accidents and work-related illnesses. CIPA is composed of representatives of employees and the employer, and its responsibilities include: identifying risks in the work process, verifying and inspecting working conditions, disseminating information related to safety and health at work, among other duties. CIPA enables process improvements with the purpose of preventing accidents and incidents.

4. Ensure that workers are using PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

The provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by the company and its use by employees is mandated by law. On construction sites, all workers must wear safety boots, helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and ear protectors if there is significant noise. Site supervisors and occupational safety professionals must monitor the use of this PPE by employees. When necessary, awareness lectures should also be conducted regarding the correct use of each piece of equipment.

5. Empower and train employees.

One of the best ways to prevent accidents is to instruct and train employees. The best way to empower them is to encourage participation in technical courses. The SESMT has various ways of raising employee awareness and promoting the prevention of accidents and the development of occupational diseases.

One of the most efficient methods used by this team is the Daily Safety Dialogue (DDS). Conducting this dialogue is a great way to exchange experiences between employees, employers, and healthcare professionals, in order to map risks and neutralize them. The DDS is not explicitly found in any regulatory standard or law, but several regulations require employers to report workplace risks and demonstrate preventive measures, which is why the DDS is so important.
